Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner (RCP), the Respiratory Therapy Student Technician will administer noninvasive respiratory care /therapy to patients as ordered by the attending physician; and perform noninvasive diagnostic procedures to evaluate the need for, and response to, therapy under the supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor or Respiratory Therapy Charge Therapist participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administers and monitors respiratory therapy treatments

  • Administers therapy according to established departmental policy

  • Responds immediately to Code Blue codes and Rapid Response calls and correctly manages the airway and external compressions under the direct supervision of a licensed RCP

  • Follows established hospital and departmental infection control policies

  • Consult Charge therapist when in doubt about a procedure or situation

Records pertinent information on patient medical record

  • Accurately documents all respiratory care interventions intravenous during assigned shift

  • Maintains up-to-date departmental records

  • Enters charges per shift for service performed/provided

  • Gives knowledgeable and accurate shift report to oncoming shift

Performs noninvasive diagnostic tests and non-invasive respiratory therapy, i.e. nebulizer therapy

  • Performs bedside spirometry and accurately records results

  • Performs peak flow, inspiratory and expiratory force and vital capacity measurements

  • Monitors pulse oximetry

  • Performs EKGs as ordered

Administers and monitors continuous oxygen therapy

  • Sets up oxygen new starts according to departmental policy within 20 minutes of notification

  • Monitors all continuous oxygen therapy, according to departmental policy

  • Performs cleaning, preventive maintenance and calibration of Respiratory Therapy equipment as required

  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to patient care. Under the supervision of a licensed RCP, Patient Care Technicians administer routine therapeutic treatment modalities (e.g., oxygen therapy, inhalation medications, chest physiotherapy, etc.) and noninvasive diagnostic/assessment procedures (e.g., pulmonary function testing and pulse oximetry). General knowledge of respiratory care and how it relates to the other health care disciplines. Good communication and interpersonal skills. They work closely with physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals. Other contacts include visitors, vendors and staff from other area hospitals. Ability to write accurate and concise clinical documents. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the department and with department customers. Must be able to demonstrate understanding of HCAs and St. Davids Patients First safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures. Recognizes that variables such as age, race, nationality, culture, disease-causing vulnerabilities, and socioeconomic factors affect the patient populations under their care as defined in the units provision of care statements. Uses interventions appropriate to these factors (e.g., interpreter, dietary preferences, social service consult, etc.)Expected to abide by all policies and procedures and inquire when needed for clarification.

Preferred: Computer skills, patient charting and office applications

What qualifications you will need:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • High School Graduate / GED

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent or higher level of education
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited respiratory care program and completed two semesters. Active student status must be maintained and documented.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Must be presently enrolled in an accredited respiratory care program, pursuant to Texas licensure required.
  • Required: BLS certification as per SDH policy
  • Preferred: ACLS certification as per SDH policy
