A Registered Nurse (RN) in Interventional Radiology (IR) is a specialized nurse who provides direct care to patients undergoing interventional radiology procedures. These procedures, typically minimally invasive, use imaging techniques (such as X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasound) to guide instruments inside the body for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. The RN in IR plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety, assisting with procedures, monitoring patient conditions, and providing post-procedural care. This role requires knowledge of radiology, surgical techniques, and a strong ability to manage patients undergoing invasive procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Pre-Procedural Care:

    • Assess and prepare patients for interventional radiology procedures by reviewing medical history, lab results, and imaging studies.
    • Educate patients and families about the procedure, including what to expect, potential risks, and post-procedure care instructions.
    • Ensure that the patient has the appropriate informed consent for the procedure and address any questions or concerns they may have.
    • Administer pre-procedural medications, such as sedatives, pain relievers, or contrast agents, as prescribed.
    • Assist in preparing the patient for the procedure, ensuring that all necessary equipment and materials are available.
  2. Assisting During Procedures:

    • Assist the physician and radiologic technologist during interventional procedures by preparing and positioning the patient, maintaining a sterile field, and providing tools or medications as needed.
    • Monitor patient vital signs throughout the procedure, ensuring stability and responding to any changes in condition.
    • Support the team in managing sedation or anesthesia, monitoring the patients level of consciousness and respiratory function.
    • Provide comfort measures to reduce anxiety and ensure patient safety during the procedure.
  3. Post-Procedural Care:

    • Monitor the patients condition in the recovery area following the procedure, assessing vital signs, pain levels, and any potential complications (e.g., bleeding, infection).
    • Administer pain relief as prescribed and assist patients with comfort and recovery.
    • Educate the patient and family on recovery protocols, including activity restrictions, wound care, and follow-up appointments.
    • Document the patients condition, procedures performed, and any changes during the recovery period in the medical records.
    • Ensure that the patient is stable and ready for discharge, coordinating with the healthcare team for further follow-up care as needed.
  4. Patient Monitoring and Safety:

    • Continuously monitor the patients vital signs, oxygenation, and consciousness during the procedure and recovery phase.
    • Respond promptly to any changes in patient condition, such as signs of infection, allergic reactions, or other complications.
    • Ensure strict adherence to infection control standards, using aseptic techniques and proper sterilization of equipment.
    • Ensure patient safety through fall precautions, managing any allergies or medical conditions, and preventing any procedural complications.
  5. Collaboration with Healthcare Team:

    • Work closely with interventional radiologists, technologists, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive care before, during, and after the procedure.
    • Communicate effectively with the patient and their family, offering support and addressing any questions or concerns throughout the process.
    • Participate in team meetings to discuss patient care, share insights, and improve the quality of care provided.
  6. Documentation and Record-Keeping:

    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient assessments, treatments, medications, procedural outcomes, and follow-up care.
    • Ensure proper documentation of any complications, interventions, or changes in patient status during and after the procedure.
    • Follow legal and institutional requirements for documentation, ensuring compliance with health regulations such as HIPAA.
  7. Education and Training:

    • Stay current with advances in interventional radiology techniques, technologies, and best practices.
    • Participate in ongoing education or certification programs related to radiology or specialty care to enhance knowledge and skills.
    • Educate patients about their conditions, the procedures they are undergoing, and post-procedure care and recovery.
  8. Infection Control and Equipment Maintenance:

    • Adhere to infection control guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand hygiene, and sterilization protocols.
    • Ensure that the interventional radiology suite and patient equipment are properly sanitized and maintained.
